GOODBYE TO A FRIEND

The staff of Metro / Smart Bar extends their condolences to the family and friends of Dannie Flesher, who died this week in his hometown of Hope, Arkansas. Co-founder of Chicago’s Wax Trax record store and label, Dannie’s influence on the Chicago music scene in the 80’s and 90’s cannot be overstated. Wax Trax was an enterprise run by true music lovers who put the music first, and with their store and label Dannie and partner Jim Nash created a home for those who loved the imported sounds of punk, electronic and industrial disco music. Metro owner Joe Shanahan counts Dannie, a true friend who advised and encouraged him during the very early years of Metro/Smart Bar, as one of the great influences upon his career. Dannie and Jim were true music fans who made their dream of owning a record store and label happen – something that was an inspiration to countless people, including Joe. For many years, Wax Trax was one of Metro’s greatest friends and partners, assisting in promoting shows, selling tickets, and most importantly adding to the Chicago music culture and scene. Dannie’s legacy will live on by the many lives he touched.
