MAUD·LIN: (ADJ.) TEARFULLY SENTIMENTAL

Camera Obscura just put out a record on Tuesday. My Maudlin Career is the band's 4th release and the first to see backing by 4AD. Lets just say, this album is getting all sorts of love.

The critics are reeling and for good reason. The band finds themselves in new territory and confidently taking a swipe at stealing your heart. The album is generously arranged with lush and intricate strings and keys. If I were a critic, I would talk about Tracyanne Campbell's (the vocalist) perfectly striking and vulnerable melodies. It hard not to mention that the songs stir up sweet nostalgia and orchestrated tunes from 50's era girl groups. But I'm not a critic, and my shortcomings are going to gloss over the poetry and steadfast sarcasm Mrs. Campbell and her fellow musicians deftly craft on this album. So don't take my word for it, take a peak at some much more qualified opinions. I suppose you could start with Pitchfork's 8.3 rating and best new album badge. Then you could follow it up with gleaming adoration from Paste, Slant, Spin, Absolute Punk, and PopMatters.

A few of those sites are streaming the album through lala, but you're probably going to want a copy. My recommendation is to grab the record at their show, when they play here at the Metro on May 29th.
