DEMO OF THE WEEK | THE MODERN TEMPER

If there's one thing that catches our attention, it's consistency. Take example The Modern Temper's newest EP A Small Sound, which finds the band moving forward with their slightly quirkier Death Cab For Cutie sound mixed with a bit of mellow Dismemberment Plan synths and keyboards. Sure, we noticed that the songwriting's improved and the vocals are a bit more in front, but the main reason we remembered the band was simply the artwork. The new EP's artwork is practically the same as their first EP Send Help with a simple graphic (a CTA train on one and a city building on the other) plus a single color pattern for the background. And that, friends, is consistency (as far as we're concerned for this demo review). It's a style, it's a stamp, it's a reminder - "Hey, remember us? We're that band that sent you music about a year ago with the purty artwork." The Modern Temper has been playing all over the city, including upcoming shows at Empty Bottle on November 13 and Schubas on November 29 (NOTE: the 13th is a free show). Two solid local shows in the same month?! Other local bands can get jealous starting...now.
