DEMO OF THE WEEK | NEW RUINS

Being a Chicago club we sometimes get tunnel vision and forget about all the other great music being made in other parts of Illinois. Champaign band New Ruins reminded us of how rich the Illinois music scene is as a whole. What started out as a long distance songwriting project between chief collaborators Caleb Means and Elzie Sexton has grown into a full-fledged band, enlisting the help of a full-time bassist/keyboardist and drummer. If the music wasn't enough for us, it just so happens that said drummer is none other than Roy Ewing, the original drummer for Champaign's Braid, who played numerous shows at Metro during their existence. New Ruins will be releasing their debut album The Sound They Make on Parasol/Mud in February 2007. For now though, it's a demo and we dig it.
