DEMO OF THE WEEK | BRIGHTON, MA

Brighton, MA is the new project of former member and co-founder of Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Matthew Kerstein. Anyone in Chicago is most likely familiar with the S.Y.G.C. name as the band, which is still together, has played all over the city, at venues large and small, opening for larger acts and headlining. Anyway, Matthew stepped away from S.Y.G.C. in order to focus on his own songwriting. Even with a two song CD we received at our offices, the songs show maturity in Matthew's voice and a bit tighter song structure. Let's get the Dylan vocal reference out of the way right now, so that we can move on to some other influences we're hearing, including Robyn Hitchcock, The Byrds and Wilco. "Bet You Never Thought" is the band's current single and oddly enough the song is a re-vamped version of a former S.Y.G.C. tune called "I Bet You Say That To All The Boys". Full circle, kids...full circle.
